Premenstrual Syndrome
What is Premenstrual Syndrome?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a cyclical occurrence, meaning you will notice certain physical and emotional changes every month.  Usually it will happen at the same time each month, beginning at ovulation (day 14) and ending when your menstruation ends.  There is normally a symptom free period from the end of your period through day 14.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms can range from mild to severe.  Typically the symptoms are breast tenderness, bloating, swelling of the hands and feet, headaches, craving for sweets, anxiety and irritability, mood swings, depression, and being unable to function.

What causes PMS?

Most medical professionals agree that PMS is related to the hormone progesterone which is produced by the ovaries the second half of the monthly cycle.  There is a relationship between a specific brain hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) and an antibody.  As your period approaches the level of antibody falls as the level of LH rises.  The high level of LH is directly related to the symptoms of PMS.  Treatment of PMS with progesterone is very effective because progesterone suppresses circulating LH and controls the symptoms of PMS.

How can I treat PMS?

There are several factors that can effect PMS.  Lifestyle changes can help to minimize the occurrence of PMS.  Diet and exercise helps PMS  by promoting a general sense of well being.  Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, saturated fats, and refined sugars will help to prevent the onset of symptoms.  PMS can also be treated with hormones and vitamin regimens.

How do I get started?

At Human Performance Longevity Center, our hormone consultants work very closely with women suffering from PMS.  We will design a treatment regimen tailored to your specific needs.  Normally our regimens will consist of progesterone, testosterone, and a series of vitamins to treat your particular symptoms.  We will go through a consultation with you to determine your needs and in conjunction with our physician, design a regimen for you.
